“The County Commissioners are committed to increasing our tax revenue from new corporate office developments so we avoid depending totally on our homeowners to fund government services. One of our strategies to attract corporate users is to redevelop and expand our Airport, so their aircraft can be based near their offices. I applaud the County Commission under the leadership of Past Chairman Mike Byrd in April 2005 for committing $15,000,000 in matching funds that resulted in the GDOT-Aviation Programs and Federal Aviation Agency adding their resources to redevelop our Airport. I pledge to continue the Commission’s focused commitment to achieve the timely completion of this project, so we will realize the value-added benefits of this asset for the County’s currents and prospective residents, both commercial and residential.”

Buzz Ahrens
Board of Commissioners-Chairman

“It is very gratifying to have this level of federal support for the Cherokee County Airport. This is a strong testament to how all levels of government can work together for the betterment of our community. This expansion would not have happened without the support of the FAA, the Georgia Department of Transportation, Cherokee County and so many business leaders,”

Tom Price, M.D
U.S. Congressman

“This project represents a milestone in public-private partnerships for general aviation airport development on a nation level. The dramatic transformation of the airport, which has the shortest runway in the metro area, in a business-class facility, will make this Airport a major transportation amenity for Cherokee County and the North Georgia region.”

Phil Eberly
W.K. Dickson, Inc. (Airport’s consultant and Program Manager)

“More than 16 million square feet of office space has been developed in neighboring North Fulton County in the last ten years. However, until now, there has been no added capacity to handle these new corporate aircraft users in our region. Many of the decision-makers, who work in North Fulton, live in or near Cherokee County. We believe what we are doing at the Cherokee County Airport will provide relief to the overcrowding conditions now being experienced at McCollum (Cobb) and Peachtree-DeKalb Airport,”

Don Stevens
Cherokee County Airport Authority Chairman

Cherokee County Regional Airport ‘cleared for take-off’

About the Project:

  • A joint local, state, federal $34 Million project
  • Scheduled for completion in 2010
  • Centrally located in Cherokee County, just off I-575
  • Facilities for over 300 aircraft
  • Full capabilities for corporate jets/charter services

Redeveloping the Cherokee County Airport results in an “economic engine” that will attract corporate aircraft and the business owners of those high-dollar aircraft into Cherokee County.

The Project will lengthen the runway from its current 3,414 feet to 5,000 feet, create a dedicated taxiway parallel to the runway, build a 10,000 square foot passenger terminal, install advanced electronics to permit instrument landings, and develop new hangars.

These infrastructure assets will become the home base for 200 hangared corporate aircraft and 100 tie-downs for smaller aircraft. The ad valorem tax revenue from these 300 based aircraft will repay the County’s $15 million investment.
