July 10, 2015

Superheroes and superheroines had a big economic impact in the Peach State in fiscal 2015.

Georgia-filmed movies and television productions generated more than $6 billion in economic impact during the year, Gov. Nathan Deal announced July 9.

During the year, 248 productions shot in Georgia and they spent $1.7 billion in the state.

Chris Carr, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, said there are currently 42 productions in the state. More than 100 new businesses have relocated to or expanded in Georgia as a result of the film industry, which has been spurred by lucrative tax incentives.

The industry also provides thousands of jobs to Georgians.

“Ant-Man,” which filmed this year at Pinewood Atlanta Studios, employed 3,579 Georgians and spent more than $106 million in the state. It is the first Marvel film produced at Pinewood, which has reportedly inked a deal to film the next series of films in Marvel’s cinematic universe at its stages in Fayetteville, Ga.

“Ant-Man” premieres July 17. Other Georgia-lensed films hitting theaters in 2015 include “Vacation,” “A Walk in the Woods,” and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2.”
