Vanderlande Industries Comes To Cherokee
A company based in the Netherlands will move a sliver of its workforce into Cherokee County.
Vanderlande Industries will move into a facility located within the Northpoint Industrial Park off Highway 92 near Interstate 75 in the extreme southwestern part of the county. The Cherokee Office of Economic Development announced the news on Tuesday during the Cherokee County Commission’s work session.
Vanderlande Industries, an automated material handling systems and service company, will lease 95,000 square feet of space inside MDH Partner’s 240 Northpoint Parkway building.
The company plans to invest $150,000 in improvements and equipment at the location and bring 12 new jobs to the county in the expansion. The facility will primarily be used for distribution purposes, but there are plans in place for a small assembly component as well.
The company expects to start normal operations out of the location by late January or early February.
Vanderlande Industries is a leading global supplier of turnkey material handling systems for airport baggage handling systems and the distribution, parcel and postal markets.
The company offers a complete solution from engineering and design to installation and operations and maintenance services. Vanderlande Industries offers more than 60 years of experience and ranks as the fifth largest material handling supplier in the world.
Its North American headquarters is located in Atlanta and serves the United States, Canada and Mexico.
County Commission Chair Buzz Ahrens added the county is “pleased to have another international company locate in Cherokee County.”
“It is a testament to Cherokee’s ability to do business in the global marketplace,” he added.
Cherokee District 4 Commissioner Jason Nelms also stated he was “proud of our economic development team” and welcomed the company to Cherokee.
Matthew Middlebrook, manager of Vanderlande’s Supply Chain, said the facility’s location was one of the many reasons why the company settled on southwest Cherokee County. The facility is easily accessible to I-75 and is “within close proximity to our main suppliers.”
“Both the landlord and Cherokee County have been a pleasure to work with,” he said, adding the company plans to take advantage of the area being designated an opportunity zone by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
Created in 2004, an opportunity zone is a state designation that allows local governments to provide tax incentives for economic development and revitalization of pockets of poverty.
Benefits include eligibility for a $3,500 tax credit for each new job created, the use of job tax credits against 100 percent of income tax liability and withholding taxes, and the expansion of the definition of business enterprise to include businesses of any kind.
Marshall Day, chairman of the Cherokee Office of Economic Development’s board of director, also applauded the news.
“Vanderlande has recognized that our community is a great destination for business,” he said. “This will send a message to other companies looking to expand or relocate (in Cherokee County).”
